Right now, the sink is on the island with a breakfast bar. The range is along the wall w/ a microwave and fan on top. I wonder if we have a hood and a cooktop, and have a double oven in the kitchen will make it less cabinet space? is the hood better than the microwave and fan? I cook 3 times/wk and do love to entertain people, so a professional cooktop is desired but not a must have...

Double oven takes more space in small kitchen?
*Posted by valinsv on Thu, Jun 15, 06 at 14:15
To answer your question, yes, double ovens will take more space. In a 10x10 kitchen, I would think the range solution to be the most efficient in terms of space utilization. The micro/fan combo is a practical use of space and does get the micro off the counter; however, the fan is a lot less efficient than a full-sized hood for ventilation, particularly for the front burners as the micro hoods do not cover the front burners. I have this configuration today and find that for the front burners the steam goes up in front of the mirco/hood and gets all the steam/oil gunk on my overhead cabinets. I would not recommend it--unless you are OK with doing your serious cooking on the rear burners. If you read the appliance forum you are sure to get lots of suggestions specifically to appliances. One idea to consider is to keep a range with hood and look into putting a multi-purpose convection microwave or speed cook oven for your 2nd oven.

Double oven takes more space in small kitchen?
*Posted by weed30 on Thu, Jun 15, 06 at 14:35
Take a look at the Maytag Gemini Range. I know I have a small kitchen too...although it's a bit bigger than yours. I see all the huge kitchens and envy the space they all have to incorporate family living areas right there in the kitchen. We are getting older with my son grown and married, so to sell and buy something like that is just not practical for us at our age. So we have to make the best of what we have and it sure looks like you did. It's very homey too. I love it!

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: SunRochy on Fri, Jul 1, 05 at 16:06
Uneamie- I know what you mean by envying the large kitchens! They stayed in an apartment building, where each unit is separately owned. Their unit had just been remodeled and the kitchen had new granite countertops. My mother-in-law measured everything. It was a galley kitchen, the "working" wall of the kitchen went fridge, 8" of counter, cooktop w/ oven underneath, 4" of counter, sink, 4" of counter. The other wall had a table, no counter or anything else. The kitchen had a door the opened off the hallway into the kitchen, this door had to be closed in order to open the fridge. Pictures of it really gave me perspective on how spoiled/fortunate we are.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: SunRochy on Sat, Jul 2, 05 at 16:00
Devi's kitchen remodel-
He was not sure how to post in the message so I put it in the link for him.
Here is a link that might be useful: Devi's Kitchen

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: uneamie on Sat, Jul 2, 05 at 20:06
SunRochy....We are just about to start demolition on our tiny kitchen so I did not take pics yet. I'm thinking of going with a darker countertop, though (maybe soapstone)--and I'm hoping that's not going to be too much contrast with the white in such a small space. (I might have to do some experiments with black contruction paper before I commit!) I really like the looks of carrara marble, too, which might keep the whole place lighter and brighter. Then I started to look around our house and realized that all the rooms and colors are "warm"...burgandy, beige, creamy whites and tans etc. So, keeping with that we changed our countertop decision and decided to keep the kitchen "warm" as well. "Black and white" is too "cool" for our "warm" colored house even though I do like the look.
We choose "rosewood terricotta". It has a hue of rose and colors of brown, black and white mix in. It's not too light and not too dark. I loved it when I saw it. I am glad that I started the thread. I wish that I thought of this before I started on updating my kitchen so I could see how others are being creative with small spaces. It took me almost a year to decide on the countertop (I was thinking of redoing the kitchen in 2006). I asked few questions on the forum to get some feedbacks on types of countertops. At first I was thinking of getting new white cabinets so I thought of stainless steel, concrete, and granite. Ahhhh........... I went to an outdoor Art Show held at 2 houses (a friend's friend) in a neighborhood full of historic homes (different styles). I was invited in the houses (both 1920s) to view the interior, I was soooo excited and honored since I am nuts about old houses (my house is 1945). In both kitchens (they were small also but had an eat in area), I spotted the exact same kind of cabinets as in my kitchen! They kept them since they said that they were still in good condition, so why not and they did replace old countertops with new countertops (I think one had granite and other one had laminate). I got to thinking that I would go ahead and keep the old cabinets since they were still in good condition, and just get a new countertop and backsplash. I thought about granite until I saw the new "granite" look-like laminate samples at Lowes. That was how I decided on Jamocha Granite laminate, which would be little less than granite to leave with more money for a new sink, faucet, and hutch-that helped a lot with more storage!. Then as for paint color, I thought of what would work well with the countertop's color and asked for opinions. The backsplash was the last thing, I could not decide on what I wanted. I tried the silver "tiles" plywood thing (similar to beadboards), but the sample I cut out to test out for a few days didn't look too great. Then I got an idea when I saw the tear and paste wallpaper so I used that as the backsplash.

RE: Flight attendant kitchen
Posted by: SunRochy on Sun, Jul 3, 05 at 13:30
Sharon- That is real small! That will be a real FUN project to work on.
Others- When any project is started, please post pictures so we all can see the progress and get ideas of placements of cabinets, stove, sink, etc in a limited space.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: KLB 2000 on Sun, Jul 3, 05 at 13:55
Sharon, your daughter's kitchen is adorable--looks like you could do lots of fun things with it! I don't see a refrigerator in there, is it undercounter or somewhere else? Actually, SunRochy, I don't think I see the refrigerator in your kitchen, either, unless it's hidden behind the wall a bit?
bunglogrl, I have almost committed to going with all undercounter refrigerators--ideally two 24" U-Line drawer sets--one with freezer/fridge drawers, and the other with 2 fridge drawers. I'm still struggling with the layout a bit--how to keep sufficient base cabinet space and still have enough refrigerator space. (I live in a one bedroom condo, so I'm not too worried about needing huge amounts of refrigeration) Originally I was planning on moving the fridge to where the range is now (I don't think it's included in any of my pictures) and putting a 24" range along the wall where the fridge is currently located, but I was so disappointed in how little counterspace I would have been left with in that configuration (plus the expense of relocating the range/venting), I have mostly abandoned that idea. However, I did find a great fridge for that layout--Liebherr has a 24" unit that fits fully inside of a cabinet, so it just looks like a pantry. They also have neat 24" stainless and paneled models available as well. (linked below)
SunRochy, good choice keeping the old cabinets! I actually really like my old upper cabinets, if it wasn't for the fact that some PO hacked off (not very carefully) the base section of one of them to make room for the fridge, I would have considered keeping them. The base cabinets, though, were a different story. (Upper cabinets seem to stay functional longer than base cabinets do!)
Uneamie, I think that granite will look great--very warm! I agree about not wanting the kitchen to look too stark with the black and white (plus some white kitchens end up looking pretty bland!). I'll have to keep looking around a bit.
Kelly
Here is a link that might be useful: Liebherr 24

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: kteach on Sun, Jul 3, 05 at 13:56
Thanks for starting this thread! My kitchen is also tiny, 8' by 8'and was sold as an eat in kitchen! We're in a small condo, so it's hard to find any space to "borrow". I was trying to decide between redoing the kitchen and moving, but the real estate market in my area is insanity, so now I'm back to the kitchen. I'm planning on knocking out the wall between the kitchen and living/dining room and making it a peninsula instead- creating a U-shaped kitchen instead of an L. I'm planning on white shaker cabs, with slab doors and hardwood floors everywhere. But I'm still trying to decide on the countertop. It's between Caeserstone Peppercorn and a granite called Blue Metallic. Does anyone know if there are any pictures around of kitchens with these counters? Also, any great space saving ideas? I'm already planning on a toe kick step stool and a backsplash rail system. Any other great ideas?

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: KLB 2000 on Sun, Jul 3, 05 at 14:01
One other thing....there are occasional threads on the Appliance forum for smaller footprint kitchen appliances, right now there is one on 24" ranges (linked below). All appliances on 1 side (the refig is hidden behind the wall on the right side). The other side has only one counter, sink and cabinets. When my DH and I bought the house, there were no appliances so we were free to buy whatever we wanted. Since the plugs for the stove and refig were in only one area, they went to their places. The issue I struggled with in the beginning was the storage. I had a lot of stuff from my single life, parents' house and wedding gifts. The space on the counter is limited so it was sort of crowded for a while. I had to pare down to few things (which is good anyway!) and figure out a way to gain more storage space. I thought of having custom made (cannot be too wide or deep) ceiling to floor cabinet, but it was out of our budget. The space is little complex because there is a chimney where a long time ago wood stove was connected to, which is covered up now. Then I found a right sized hutch, has more storage than most, and also a microwave could be placed on the shelf. Now I have more space on the counters for cooking and doing other things. Also I put a buffet table in the dining room to use as storage for dishes and other things that are not used often.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: devi on Mon, Jul 4, 05 at 12:59
SunRochy,
Thanks for attaching my pictures, but I'm a She not a He.
My mom had a very large kitchen with a center island, it was beautiful but I think it was not as efficient as my kitchen. There are definite advantages to a galley kitchen.
Everything is right at my fingertips. All I need to do is turn around to get to the refrigerator, 2 steps to the stove, turn around for the dishwasher, 1 step sideways to the sink, 1 step sideways to the prep area.
Like I said, compact and efficient. I thought long and hard on where and how I would use the space and what I felt would work for me. I chose full extension draws instead of cabinets with shelves or pull outs and I couldn't be happier.
To be honest, I would have loved a few more cabinets, actually an area where I could have had a bake center but living in a condo where I am back to back and side to side with my neighbors, there just wasn't any where to go. So I put all my appliances (I didn't want the clutter on the counters) in what used to be my pantry closet. I don't use these on a daily basis so it works for me.
I think the most important part of designing a small kitchen is knowing yourself. Really think about what your needs are. Great thread...love these and/or the budget kitchen topics!
My kitchen actually feels big to me compared to others I've had; it's about 10 x 15. However, with four necessary doorways and low-to-the-ground windows, it's a quirky little floor plan.
Given our smallish budget and our lifestyle/way we live in the house, structural changes were out. So we just had fun with the reno (well, as much fun as one can have with a mostly-DIY, way-too-dragged-out reno!) and created a space for me to cook, him to clean, and us to stow people who insist on being in the kitchen when we entertain (g).
It's by no means perfect--and I do LOVE so many of the small kitchens GWebbers have and am in awe of their cleverness. I still have no contiguous counterspace (which actually suits how I cook) and I'm cranky that the frig didn't get sunk into a closet a bit per our original plan. [Standoff Chez Vix!] But I enjoy cooking in the space and have many happy memories already, so life could be a lot worse, LOL.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: TimIndy on Mon, Jul 4, 05 at 18:09
SunRochy,
I've just started to "hang around" the kitchen and bath forums and saw this thread that you started.
Thanks for starting it.
I must say that it's realistic and for that reason very inspiring.
Your kitchen is perfect.
A perfect example of what should be done in an antique home (yes - yours is an antique).
Since your cabinets were in good condition (that's obvious from looking at them)- if you had ripped them out it would have ruined the entire look and the homes authenticity.
By the way, I don't see a dishwasher.
Is that something that you elected to skip?
It's easy when you look at magazines and televison and movies to think that you should model your lives and expectations on those images.
Do I need to tell anyone here how phony those images are?
As it turns out, space and money constraints are a good thing. Yes, before I was tempted for new cabinets with the gliding drawers and sliding shelves for pots and pans. Now I'm glad that I kept the cabinets, left the layout alone and work with what I have. That was why I thought of starting this thread since I was thinking that there are some people with small houses, just small kitchens and wanting to work with the current layout and size. It was not easy to find some specific ideas for my kitchen and bathroom although I found several places through a site (posted below). It just takes more time to find information.
As for the dishwasher, there was none when the house was bought and there is no place to put one in. Also my MIL is my dishwasher *LOL* since she loves doing that chore.
Here is a link that might be useful: Decorating/Remodeling on I Village

DC condo kitchen
Posted by: SunRochy on Mon, Jul 4, 05 at 20:53
Oh I want to add that when I lived in Washington, DC, I bought a condo with a small gallery kitchen that was in a terrible condition. The dark brown cabinets were extremely filthy, was not able to get them clean even with several cleanings. The sink base cabinet was damaged by water and beginning to rot, yewww. The countertops were sickly yellow with lovely cigarette burns. So I got new white cabinets and laminate (mixture of green/black) countertops. The "new" kitchen helped the condo to be sold in 1 week according to the buyer. I will post a picture if I am able to get a friend to scan it later.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: Andrea345 on Mon, Jul 4, 05 at 22:36
Well, Ida Know, I took 3" where I could get 'em & I added 2' where I could, but my 8'9"x9 kitchen turning into 9x11 (on one wall only) isn't what you'd call tremendous.
We chose not to blow out the exterior wall or move the kitchen into the garage, but that's pretty much the extent of "being sensible" for us. We like its efficient size, but we had to get the workspaces arranged so that we could get two people in there working. Our house was built in 1949, but it only had 3 lower cabinets besides the sink base - a 15" 4-drawer, a 12" 2 shelf / door & a 9" no-shelf door. They're sturdy, that's for sure, I hate tearing them out, but they are going to go. Worse, they're backless, so I can't send 'em to a "greater good."
No, we did a remodel about 12 years ago, added a large butcher block cabinet with drawers & pull-outs in an attempt to make the space work, but the layout is just not working with us. We're climbing over each other. I didn't tear down the last wall standing b/c there was electrical in it, but now I will be. All to replace the drawers the 5' butcher block gives us.
I'm still staying small though. I like being able to turn around & throw something into the sink. It's great to be able to reach the frig in a step. I can pull stuff out & put it back without running around a track. However, in the future, I'll be giddy to be able to reach the trash without tripping over the dog's bowl. I'm glad to see the refrigerator move away from the stove and the entrace it blocks. We focused on contiguous counterspace. I'm going to have nearly four feet to call my own. No sharing! He's got the back end now. It's all in the layout, I swear. It's all in the layout. Our decisions are nearly through & we're about ready to sign checks.
Rules we've broken: deep, dramatic colors in cabinetry; contrasting colors between the cabinets & the granite; darker walls (works with the rest of the house). Rules we've followed, uh, I didn't move the sink or the gas for the stove and I chose materials over space. I think the step from the sink to the stove is in there. The frig is a bit further, but at least it won't be blocking the hallway to the laundryroom any more. Oh that used to grate on my nerves.
Layout is everything. -a
Here is a link that might be useful: Here's the plan - so far. I have lurked in this forum for some time, gathering ideas, but I get sad sometimes because it seems like everyone in the world has much more space than I do!
I wonder if anyone has a picture of, or could recommend some resources for, "one-wall-layout" kitchens? I have a galley kitchen but all the appliances are against one wall, and it's not wide enough for another configuration. That makes everything fairly efficient, but rather inflexible. Right now I'm just dying for counter space. The current layout, from left to right, is stacked washer/dryer, refrigerator, a smidgen of counter space (24 inches or so?), the sink, a smidgen more counter space (maybe another 24 inches?), the stove, and then a lot more counter space -- but its so far from the sink at that point it's impractical to move. I'm still in the early stages of collecting ideas, so any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
(I feel like some of this could be helped if I could move the plumbing. But, I fear its really expensive and I'm in a little condo besides, so I'm not sure how much I can really do in that area.)

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: smbnobles on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 13:03
My kitchen is small enough, that I can't get it all in one shot.
It felt much, much smaller, until we took out the cooktop and wall oven. The reason I am asking is because I was wondering if it would be possible to move the stove over next to the refrigerator? My refrig is next to the stove. The only thing is if there is not an elec outlet fitted for a stove next to the refrig, an elecricitian will be needed to install one. That way you will have the whole counter space to the right of the sink with no breaks.
Also if you are getting new cabinets, you may want to consider for the top ones to be all way to the ceiling then store things that you don't use often on the top shelves.
How wide is the kitchen? If there is enough space, you may want to see if you would want to have a built in shelving unit or cabinets up high on the other wall where people (even tall ones) heads will not bump into. I was given this suggestion by a KD 2 years ago when I was thinking about a floor to ceiling cabinet unit for the space where the hutch is now. This will give more storage and get things off the counter.
One more thing, there is a poster- Sharon sd's daugther has a very small kitchen in her new condo. She has a "half" refrig and countertop can go over it. It is fine for people who do not need a lot of refrig space and do not cook much. I don't know about your lifestyle but I just want to suggest this idea as well as the others.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: mrsmarv on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 13:38
Our's is an "eat-in" kitchen, since we have no dining room...we love our home but the lack of a dining room and a family/rec room limits us as far as entertaining...sigh. I have a gas stove and for some reason I have it in my mind that it might be hard to move the gas stove because of the gas line. But, that's not necessarily true, right? These kitchen designers can do ANYTHING these days -- I read the mags! :-) I've never seen a stove right next to the refrigerator, but you do what you gotta do in a limited space.
I do need a whole fridge because I do a lot of cooking, but that is a very good space saving option for the right person.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: Talley Sue NCY on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 16:00
sac1971, you can move the stove pretty easily. There's a hose, that's all; you can tuck it behind the cabinets, or run it tight against the back inside them (U- or C-fittings will hold it in place).
You can also run the water lines almost anywhere you want to.
Moving the DRAIN is something you usually can't do--you can't change where it enters the "stack" for the entire building (I'm in a co-op apartment), and you have to keep the sink *close enough* that you can have the proper slope from your sink to the stack.
But, you might be surprised. Our sink is now about 30 inches away from the drain; I don't have room for a garbage disposal, but the drain runs back behind the sink cabinet, over behind the dishwasher, and into the wall to meet the drain about halfway through the next cabinet.
My vote--move the stove farther away from the sink, and create a bigger work area between them.
Also, be sure to have counterspace on the other wall--I have a section of 18" counterspace that is actually very usable. I'd suggest slightly shallower uppers there, or else raise them an additional 6 inches (and space shelves VERY close together; that's what I've done, and I can reach the bottom 2 shelves easily and the 3rd shelf OK).
I've found that I always have something sitting in the rear-most 6 inches of my counterspace anyway.
So as long as I don't try to store stuff on that 18" counterspace, I can use it really well. The only thing I *can't* do easily there is roll out dough.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: sac1971 on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 17:09
I need to measure my space to answer the good questions posed here. I'm not sure of the width of my kitchen. I know it's not wide enough to add an island. My off-hand guess is six or seven feet, but that's just a guess.
I think that if I could just spread everything out more, I'd be fine. Like I said, at one end of the kitchen it's basically nothing -- just counter space underwhich you could get two stools easily and use it as a bit of an eat-in kitchen space. But at the other end, all the appliances are jammed up.
If I could move everything down, it would help a lot. I am reluctant to lose that eat-in space. However, I do have some cabinets on the wall opposite the sink/fridge/range, and I was thinking that perhaps that could be a little eating bar area.
Anyway, i'm still just collecting ideas so I really appreciate you guys weighing in.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: SunRochy on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 17:31
Mrs. Marv- Grrrr....Wish I have that kind of window over the sink. So much real cooking and inspiration is possible in a tight space! SunRochy et al, is it possible to create a "permanent" tiny kitchen gallery? (no chit-chat, just photos & comments from kitchen owners?) I think this would be most inspirational, not just for tiny kitchen folk, but smallish-kitchen folk as well. The discussion here is great but it would be a great resource to have photos longer than "discussions" last.
My kitchen is on the small side & started out with 3 windows, 3 doors & a staircase to "inspire me." I've always lived with teeny tiny kitchens so my "small box kitchen" seems positively roomy. American standards are quite different, as others point out. My kitchen is big enough to splurge on a few dimensions, but not all, & I still haven't figured out how to get a teeny tiny table in there, still I have to say I've made my best decisions "thinking small." I'm learning what really matters to me in the kitchen, and I'm paying strict attention to what really happens in a kitchen in our house.
One of my shocking "think small" decisions was to install just one (1) DW drawer. I decided I needed the extra storage over massive dishwashing capability. And yes, some kitchens have 2 full size DWs! I figure I'll run conveniently frequent small loads and still have extra storage in a drawer underneath. I'm not living in my kitchen yet I'll have to report later on the "brilliance" of this plan. Some of you who can't spare space for a full size might want to consider one drawer. Of course, not everyone wants/needs a DW...

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: Talley_Sue_NYC on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 20:44
sac1971, do post the dimensions of your kitchen.
And how deep are those cabinets on the opposite wall? Are they, by chance the full 24 inches deep? If so, you can move your range over there (esp. if you can get below the floor.
I have an 8-foot-wide kitchen, and my range is one the opposite wall from my sink. The BIG secret to making that smaller space work (and actually, I *like* it) is to NOT have the sink directly across from the stove.
And, having appliances (I count the sink as an "appliance") on differing walls might encourage you to use the counterspace opposite as work space; as it is now, I bet you seldom use it, because it's away from ALL the action!
(you might also consider, if you can swing the expense, a counter-depth fridge to go on the opposite wall)

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: tkingny on Mon, Jul 11, 05 at 20:46
Athomein1914 - I love the idea of a permanent tiny kitchen gallery! It is six feet wide. Then I got distracted and forgot to measure anything else, but the cabinets on the "appliance" side seem a standard depth. The cabinets on the opposite wall, which are behind me when I stand at the sink, are much more shallow -- perhaps a foot deep. They're a little higher than waist high for me (I'm 5'5), and I use them to keep tupperware and some appliances I don't use that much, like my toaster.
I really shouldn't complain too much about the kitchen. It's doing quite a bit of work. I have a pretty big fridge (not a little apartment-sized one,) a stacked mini washer/dryer, a range, and a dishwasher. I would just love to have a leeetle more counter space (oh, what the heck -- I'd love to have a few more things, like a dual fuel range! And a microwave! And a prettier back splash! But the counter space is pretty important too.)
I was thinking that, if I could get more cabinets on the "appliance" side of the kitchen, I could turn that opposite wall into a bit of a breakfast bar thingie, eliminating the cabinets there. Then I could have a bit of kitchen seating AND the cabinets and counter space I'd like.
Also, please count me in among the people who would love to see a permanent gallery of "tiny" kitchens. There are so many mondo-gigantic kitchens out there, but for many of us (condo dwellers like me, for example) that's just not an option.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: Lithigin on Tue, Jul 12, 05 at 11:11
I'd love to see a Tiny kitchen gallery! Mine is 9' x 14.5', so it's certainly not miniscule, but it is under the 144 sq. ft cutoff that someone proposed above. 80% finished pics are in My Page, and now that I've replaced my camera, I'll have to get some *finished!* pics up.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: sac1971 on Tue, Jul 12, 05 at 12:07
Forgive me for missing a question from scotland, who asked why can't I move the fridge. You're right, there's no reason why the fridge has to be where it is, but I can't quite envision how I could gain counter space just by moving the fridge. If I swap the fridge with the stove, it'd be (from right to left) washer/dryer stack, stove, a smidgen of counter, sink, a smidgen of counter space, fridge. Perhaps I'm not imagining your suggestion correctly?
The other constraint is that the kitchen is basically a wide corridor for me to get to the living room from a little sunroom area, which is where I enter the condo (the sunroom opens into our parking lot.) So I have to think about the way doors swing, and where would be a logical place to put certain appliances.
I am sure there are solutions -- the counter-depth fridge might be one space saving measure, for example. If there were a way to get the sink on the opposite wall that'd be great too...but there's no plumbing there, and the kitchen is only six feet wide. Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll just continue to listen.

Small/Tiny Kitchens Gallery Set up!
Posted by: SunRochy on Tue, Jul 12, 05 at 12:12
Starpooh- Hope you don't mind, but I didn't want to put more burdens on you.
I decided to go ahead and set up a new blog for Small kitchens. You wouldn't gain any counterspace, but you'd get more where you would use it and less where you don't. Not only would you have more workspace next to the sink, but you'd have a place to park the laundry basket!
My kitchen is something like 10' by 11', which sounds OK until you realize that one end on the room has a door, a double doorway, and another door. That leaves about 10' by 7.5', and there's yet another door and a double window. And two small children, a dog and DH who all want to stand in the kitchen while I cook. I long for a big, honkin' island, but that would require a new house. Unless I make DDs share a room and I make that pesky third bedroom part of the kitchen...

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: NWesterner on Tue, Jul 12, 05 at 15:06
mrsmarv,
Thanks for the paint formula. I am playing with some greens for the main area of my house. Have been thinking of BM Rosemary Sprig.
I thought your counter might be port or a solid surface of the same color. I had looked at it and liked it when we decided to stick with laminate, but my DH wasn't that thrilled and I was concerned that it might be too solid and show scratches. Has it worn well for you?
We ended up with Basalt Slate as it looked like a piece of honed granite tile my DH liked. Didn't know if the port (or something similar) would limit me with colors for the kitchen. But think I would have enjoyed the Port as it is a little hard getting used to the black after mostly white!
Your kitchen is very warm and lovely. What are your cabinets and the stain color? They remind me of our old shellaced woodwork in this house (although your color is somewhat lighter and much nicer). I fell in love with your huge window and windowsill!
My kitchen is 11x13 with 3 doors and one window, but not as large as yours. Fortunately, although across the room from the counters, our refrig is sunk mostly in a wall which gives more floor space. One wall of counters with sink and a free standing stove and small 14" cabinet next to it on another wall, butted right up to the basement door! Since I'm short, I moved our table into the middle of the room as an island with stools that fit under it. Gives me more work space.
Thanks for your pictures (I don't even have a digital camera ). As far as the maintenance of the countertop-it's relatively easy, except for DH who is *quite* messy! I use Countertop Magic on it periodically and it works very well. DH loves the port color as much as I do and agrees that it really enhances the color stain of the cabinets. I haven't found that the color limits my choices, since my favorite color is red anyway ;o). If I get a little tired of the red and green, I could use other colors that I like, such as deep yellow/ochre, cream, perhaps blue (although I am not a lover of blue I think it would look clean and sharp). I think that your black countertop sounds very nice...it's the one color I would have chosen had we not gotten the port.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: starpooh on Tue, Jul 12, 05 at 20:19
SunRochy ~ Do I mind? lol! The addition of skylights, and the single-pane glass door and window were to add light to a space that was originally very dark. The raising of the ceiling and the hanging pendants and skylights draw your eye up and let us put in tall cabinets without feeling claustrophobic. In this small space there are pots & pans drawers, small and tall pull-out pantries, spice drawers, pull out garbage bins, dog food storage, wine storage and a pull-out dishdrawer.
The kitchen is also our laundry room--last "pantry" on left houses our stackable washer/dryer and laundry products:

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: KLB_2000 on Sun, Jul 17, 05 at 15:50
Oh..mongon, I LOVE your kitchen! Ha! If I was able to get rid of the door going into my laundry room, then the pantry I put in there would take up the space lost by the door. I'm looking for NKBA guidelines as to what "small" means m'self. I found this quote:
"The total shelf/drawer frontage* is:
a. 1400" for a small kitchen (less than 150 square feet); b. 1700" for a medium kitchen (151 to 350 square feet); and c. 2000" for a large kitchen (greater than 350 square feet). "
http://www.nkba.org/xprofessionals/planning_guidelines_detail.asp?sec=k
I just now did the lookup to get that note / specs. Until now, I didn't know what qualified as "small." Their "small" makes me think I'm puny. 150 sq.ft. sounds like a mansion to me. Jeez. That does seem huge. So, maybe we just make up our limits: "smaller = 101-150 sq. ft.", "puny = 51 - 100 sq. ft.", "tiny = 10-50 sq. ft." My MIL had a functional kitchen maybe 4' wide & 8' long (if that). After that is "closet."
best wishes, -a

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: Beeswax18 on Mon, Jul 18, 05 at 7:12
My kitchen is small—about 10' by 11' and we have to work around three doorways. We're updating it with new cabinets and appliances, but sadly we're only gaining about 4" more counter space. We couldn't justify taking out any walls or doing anything major since we don't plan on being in the house for more than five years (plus our pocketbooks are fairly shallow), so we're working within the footprint of the original kitchen. We took out the radiator under the sink and replaced it with a kickspace heater, so finally I'll be able to store all my cleaning products down there.
We've only just started so I don't have a ton of pictures yet. The new cabinets just went in on Friday. This week the floor goes in and the appliances arrive! In a neighborhood of 750 square foot cottages on 25 by by 70 lots a homeowner with a 150 square foot kitchen will think it is enormous. And they will both be right.
The NKBA is in the business of selling us stuff to put in our kitchens. They have a vested interest in inflating our perception of the proper size for a kitchen.
My personal view is that a kitchen is small when incorporating a standard 30" range, a standard 30" fridge and a standard 24" dishwasher significantly compromises the counter space and storage space. In a dead end galley kitchen the cutoff could be as small as 50 or 60 square feet. In an awkwardly shaped room with lots of doors and tall windows it could be well over 100 square feet.
So another way of defining a small kitchen might be that it is one where incorporating a "standard" range, fridge and dishwasher requires some clever design work.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: minikit on Mon, Jul 18, 05 at 8:58
SunRochy is doing double duty with this thread and a more recent one specifically about the Small Kitchens blog she has set up.
It's frustrating that threads in the Kitchen Forum speed through--and out--in less than a week; at the moment the earliest post is from July 13! So... how about following up both of SunRochy's threads with one called simply Small Kitchens-Part 1. It would bring together the kind of material now appearing in two places, and some of us would be ready to supply links to relevant threads in other forums. SunRochy would then have one primary site from which to capture material for the blog.
Thanks, SunRochy, for a terrific contribution--as I've already said on the other thread! Consolidating our posts would help to avoid duplication, bring together the veterans and the newcomers, and allow for continuation through Parts 2, 3, 4, etc. as long as there's interest. See the IKEA and Lighting threads, for example, as well as several in the Appliances forum.
Of course, the "main" thread shouldn't discourage a poster from starting a more specific thread meant to reach a broader audience--see "who has a small kitchen sink?" for example. One of us can link it to the main thread so that SunRochy knows it's relevant to the blog.
Now, I'll post this on SunRochy's other thread and promise that this will be my ONLY double post!

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: SunRochy on Tue, Jul 19, 05 at 23:04
Saved the thread on MSWord to be placed onto the blog. At maximum it could open SunRochy up for liability issues as the copyright of web content in forums can be a very gray area. It's not clear to me if THS and/or iVillage own the content published to this site or if the individual poster owns their own postings and photos. In either case the copyright doesn't pass to anyone who cares to republish it, otherwise this entire site could be reproduced elsewhere without any copyright liability.
At the bottom of the GW home page there is a copyright notice that reads "Copyright © The Virtual Mirror." I was curious if that was a 24" range myself, but there is a better pic of the range with the other photos, and I think it's a 30" (looks like it has grates between the burners, and I don't think the 24" version has those, right?)
(and hope your search for the right kitchen remodeling place is going well!)
RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: Terila on Sat, Jul 23, 05 at 12:49
Mongon, your kitchen is incredible .. how stylish it is for such a small space. Every detail is just perfect.
I have a question too: What brand is your knife magnet? It is exactly what I am looking for in my very contemporary kitchen.
RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: mongon ) on Sun, Jul 24, 05 at 1:43
I go away for a week and I miss all your lovely compliments!
Thanks, KLB/Kelly--The faucet is a Concinnity in Polished Nickel, and I LOVE the sprayer. We were originally planning on getting a wider, rectangular sink so the sprayer hose would have lain flat against the back of the sink wall, but we changed to the narrow "D" sink (more counter space) however chose to keep the faucet order as intended, so the hose lays on the curve of the sink... But it does not bother us--it's not stiff so it's easy to clean around and the sink is very deep (almost 11" w/ undermounting)
The drawer under the dishdrawer is quite deep and I bought heavy duty full extension tracks so that it could hold pots and pans. We have two large pots/pans drawers and they hold more than we anticipated so we have not decided how best to utilize it just yet, thus the towels... (You can read about the Dishdrawer installation on the last IKEA thread)
TkingNY--Yes, the change in lighting is quite dramatic... The granite is called Seafoam Green--it is gray, sage green, and brown with black specks here and there. We tried to go middle of the road in coloring, since we both wanted VERY different counters in the space...
The range is a 30" Viking, with sealed burners and continuous grates--the middle grates serve as a much-needed landing pad and help with moving things around easily.
Terila--The knife holder is a $5 IKEA purchase and I LOVE it!!! :) One of our best purchases (we got rid of the butcher-block knife holder in our neighborhood garage sale today (one less thing on the counter)!!!
Let me know if you want me to post the rest of the kitchen specs.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: starpooh on Tue, Jul 26, 05 at 11:39
mongon ~ what an amazing job you've done incorporating so much in to such a small space! Sorry 'bout bugging you to include your almost-finished kitchen. I guess I get overly excited when I see a kitchen that looks completed. Just want to include it in the blog so folks (like me) can find it! :-)
SunRochy - I saw a small kitchen with a wonderful layout in one of my kitchen mags. Will try to find some time to post details and photos of it.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: SunRochy on Mon, Aug 1, 05 at 10:34
Starpooh- Ok thank you!

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: mongon on Mon, Aug 1, 05 at 10:46
Starpooh--not to worry--I'm happy to be included. Same thing as one would do on a research paper.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: athomein1914 on Sun, Aug 7, 05 at 20:04
mongon, I am overwhelmed by your stunning, not-finished kitchen! The sprayer is lovely, wish I'd seen that before deciding on no sprayer. My own simple faucet is still waiting on a table which makes me think.....
In so many ways, I truly love small to tiny kitchens, they demand good planning and ease for the cook. Of course I'd love a tiny kitchen opening up to a small table & chairs as the best of both worlds.
mongon, thanks so much for your photos. Your kitchen is extraordinary.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: mongon on Sun, Aug 7, 05 at 20:35
Athomein1914--thanks for the compliments! The faucet is similar to the one that used to be in the kitchen except for the addition of the sprayer, and we love it :)
For those of you who have looked at the colors in my kitchen, I have a question for you: We have a breakfast nook adjoining the space. I have utilized the very same cabinets for the bench seating and shelves (color is grayish/sageish) and am in the process of making the cushion covers and pillows for it. We originally picked up a taupe-ish colored chenille prior to getting the granite. But now that I've cut and laid out the pieces for the 7 ft. cushion and sewed one of the pillows, we're unsure as to the color...it seems to blend into the cabinets OK, but not so well next to the granite color which has gray, sage, gold, some brown and some black, and the walls in the nook, which are a pale gold (the floors are espresso). Does anyone have suggestions on color for the bench cushions? Maybe some contrasting pillows... I thought I'd taken care of this part, but it's got to coordinate with the rest of the kitchen, since its literally next to it and in the same style.

RE: Small / 'Tiny' kitchen pictures
Posted by: librarymom03 on Mon, Aug 8, 05 at 11:28
Dear Mongon:
Your kitchen is the PERFECT blend of Period Style with modern conveniences.
